You’ve probably got your phone in your hand or nearby whilst reading this Blog. In fact, you might even be reading this Blog ON your phone. How many of you write in full sentences with the correct grammar and spelling when sending text messages on your phone? Not many, is the likely answer.
The reason for this? Lets face it, it saves a lot of time and effort; and time is something which we cannot afford to waste in today’s day and age. The problem with this however, is that, the younger generation are making this into a habit and often use this so called ‘slang’ language in their everyday speech and written work. The chances are that if you ask most children on how to spell the word ‘tomorrow’, they probably give you the spelling ‘2mro’. This is slightly worrying especially if adults are encouraging children to write in this form without correcting errors.
How does this affect me you ask? Well, in today’s current climate from trying to find a job and filling in an application form to writing a letter, grammar is the first thing that is noticed. As competition is so fierce in the job market, many even use this as part of their filtration process. Don’t let the use of ‘slang’ language be barrier for you to achieve your full potential.
How can I make changes now? Let’s take it one step at a time. The next text you send, write it in full sentences with the correct spelling. By making these small changes, you will start to see the impact it has on both your written and spoken English. Not only that, you can go one step further and develop your skills online- the world is your oyster.
